Praise for Bob Rivard’s Work Online

BobRivardIt’s come to the point that we must pick and choose which social media contributors we want to follow.  Let me pay accolades to one I’ve known for many years.  Bob Rivard was a print guy, having worked as a newspaper editor and news journalist for most of his life.  When he left the print world, he saw the writing on the wall, or in cyber space, and created The Rivard Report, an online hyper-local magazine serving San Antonio’s urban core.

What began as a blog in February, 2012, has morphed into an incredible online magazine that is one of the best I’ve ever seen.  It’s clean and so easy to navigate through.

If you haven’t had the good fortune of meeting Bob Rivard and his creation, I’m proud to introduce you! To learn more about the Rivard Report, you can follow them on Twitter @rivardreport,  or visit http://www.therivardreport.com. I’m sure you will be as impressed with their work as I am, and if so, I encourage you to like them on Facebook and sign up for the Rivard Report’s Weekly Story Digest (they promise- no spam!) by entering your email address on the […]

The Power of Connecting – Kathleen Quiroz

Kathleen Quiroz is a highly respected attorney and partner with Strasburger Price whose practice focuses on healthcare regulatory issues. More importantly, she is my friend. There are very few people I know who put others before themselves better than Kathleen does. She works absolutely ridiculously long hours, but when we’re together her total focus is on me. She is very concerned about how I am doing, and consistently offers advice and assistance in reaching my goals.

Both of us have grown exponentially through our connection, which has developed into a very strong relationship. Not only do we do business together, we also celebrate our friendship outside the professional arena. That is the power of connecting!

To put it bluntly, networking will yield you a drawer full of business cards and connecting will yield you some meaningful relationships. That said, you can understand why I wince when referred to as the queen of networking.

At a conference years ago we were challenged to see who could gather the most business cards. It was all about meeting as many people as possible in a specified period of time. I found the activity quite offensive, and knew immediately if that was the secret to achieving success, I was not going to amount to much in life. That exercise might be a bit extreme, but I’m sure most of us have been to events where we have received a pocketful of cards, and can’t recall who gave them to us.

There are multiple opportunities to attend networking events. It is inevitable you’ll encounter folks who are schmoozing and trying to sell themselves to as many people as possible. Often the attack is cold and impersonal. It’s all about them and their business, […]
